The temple is believed to be one of the oldest Shivling in the cave. Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is located 6.5 km from Dehradun city. The name Tapkeshwar was given due to the continuous droplets of water on the Shivling, hence, it was named ‘Tapkeshwar‘.

Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is steeped in mythological lore and historical significance. According to legend, it is believed to be the spot where Lord Shiva, known as ‘Tapkeshwar’ or the one who trickles down drops of water, meditated in seclusion.
The temple derives its name from the natural cavern (‘Gupta Kashi’) where the water droplets trickle down continuously from the ceiling, creating a mystical ambiance reminiscent of Lord Shiva’s divine presence.
This is an ancient temple and a widespread legend is popular about the emergence of the Tapkeshwar Temple. It is believed that Ashwathama, the son of Dhronacharya, was born inside the cave. However, his mother did not have enough milk to be able to feed her newborn.
Ashwathama, a devotee of Lord Shiva was wise beyond his years. He prayed to Lord Shiva to grant him some milk to satiate his hunger. Lord Shiva is well known for his generosity.
Lord Shiva granted the wish of the newborn for milk to suffice his hunger. Since then, a Shiva Linga has been established there which is said to grant the wishes of all those who visit this temple seeking the Lord’s blessings.

In Kalyuga, the stream of milk turned into water, which is still falling on the Shivling continuously. For this reason, this place was named Tapkeshwar.
