The Legend of Hanuman
The origin of Hanuman is intricately woven into the epic Hindu scripture, the Ramayana. Hanuman, born to Anjana and Kesari, is an incarnation of Lord Shiva and is blessed with incredible strength, agility, and devotion from his very birth.
His unwavering loyalty and selfless service to Lord Rama during the search of Sita Mata from the captivity of demon king Ravana make him a central figure in Hindu mythology epic Ramayana.
One of the most remarkable episodes in the Ramayana story is Hanuman’s leap across the ocean to reach Lanka in search of Sita. This incredible courageous mission showcases his divine powers (Ashta siddhis), devotion and loyalty, earning him the title of “Mahavir” or the Great Hero. Hanuman’s selfless dedication to Lord Rama and his contribution in the victory of Lord Rama over demon of Lanka Ravana make him a symbol of loyalty, strength, and devotion.

Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated with great fervor and devotion by millions of Hindus and devotees worldwide. Devotees observe fasts, visit temples, and chant hanuman prayers, Mantras, Arti and hymns dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

His early exploits, including flying towards the sun and leaping across the ocean, established him as a powerful and divine being. Hanuman’s birth story sets the stage for his later role in the epic Ramayana, where his unwavering devotion and strength play a pivotal role in Lord Rama’s journey.

Performing Hanuman puja on this sacred day is believed to bestow divine blessings, strength, and protection upon devotees. Here’s a brief guide on the materials and process for Hanuman Jayanti puja:
- Idol or Image of Lord Hanuman: Obtain a small idol or image of Lord Hanuman, preferably made of metal (Brass or Copper) or stone, for the puja.
- Puja Altar ( Deo Ghar or Chowrang ) : Set up a clean and sacred space for the puja, facing east or northeast direction. Place a clean cloth preferably in Red colour on the altar to serve as a base for the puja items. A decorative rangoli surrounding the puja altar would enhance the altar decoration.
- Incense Sticks (Agarbatti): Light incense sticks to create a fragrant atmosphere and invoke divine presence. An aromatic Chandan ( Sandalwood ) dhoop can also be used.
- Lamp (Diya): Light a lamp filled with desi cow ghee or oil as a symbol of illumination and divine light. In addition to lamp some quantity of Bhimseni Camphor (Kapoor) is also needed for puja.
- Flowers: Offer fresh flowers, preferably marigold or red flowers, to the deity as a symbol of devotion and purity.
- Fruits: Any seasonal fruits such as bananas, apples, and oranges as a symbol of abundance and offering to Lord Hanuman. A fresh coconut is also required as offering.
- Prasad: Prepare a simple offering of sweets such as sweet Bundi , Khadi Sakhar, preferably jaggery or bananas, to offer to the deity and distribute as prasad to devotees.
- Purification: Begin the puja by purifying yourself and the puja space. Take a bath and wear clean clothes. Sprinkle water on the altar and surroundings.
- Invocation: Light the lamp, Bhimseni Kapoor, and incense sticks. Chant the Hanuman Chalisa or other Hanuman mantras to invoke the presence of Lord Hanuman.
- Offerings: Offer flowers, fruits, and prasad to the deity while chanting prayers and mantras dedicated to Lord Hanuman. You can also recite the Hanuman Ashtak or other Hanuman Stotra’s.
- Aarti: Perform aarti by waving the lit lamp and camphor in a clockwise direction in front of the deity. Sing or recite the Hanuman Aarti or other devotional songs dedicated to Lord Hanuman.
- Prayer and Meditation: Offer your prayers and desires to Lord Hanuman, seeking his blessings for strength, courage, and protection. Meditate on his divine qualities and contemplate his teachings.
- Conclusion: Conclude the puja by bowing down before the deity and seeking forgiveness for any shortcomings in the worship. Distribute prasad to family members and devotees.
- Cleanup: Dispose of the puja materials properly and clean the puja space. Reserve the prasad for consumption later or distribute it among family and friends.
